Government Breaks Ground for Construction of 250-Bed Cardiac Hospital in Naguru

The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah, has represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the long-awaited 250-bed cardiac hospital under the Uganda Heart Institute in Naguru, Kampala.

The Uganda Heart Institute Hospital project will be built on a 10-acre piece of land provided by the government in Naguru, Central Kampala.

In a statement read on his behalf by Prime Minister Nabbanja, President Museveni described the project as a significant milestone in the NRM government’s commitment to delivering quality and modern healthcare services to the people of Uganda.

The President urged stakeholders, agencies, contractors, and the Uganda Heart Institute management to ensure value for money and timely completion of the project.

“We shall not entertain delays. The people of Uganda deserve a fully operational world-class hospital within the agreed timeframe of two years,” President Museveni emphasized in his statement.

The hospital complex will consist of three blocks, housing three operating theatres, two cardiac catheterization laboratories, and 40 state-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care Units (ICUs).

The project is aimed at:

Providing affordable and accessible cardiovascular treatment and care for all Ugandans.
Enhancing specialized teaching, training, and research in the field of cardiology.
Strengthening early prevention and awareness programs on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).
Reducing the number of patients referred abroad for specialized cardiac treatment.
Promoting medical tourism in Uganda.

This ambitious project is being financed by the Government of Uganda and a $70 million loan secured from the OPEC Fund (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries), BADEA (The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa), and the SFD (Saudi Fund for Development).

Once completed, the hospital is expected to be a game-changer in Uganda’s healthcare sector, offering world-class cardiovascular services while positioning the country as a regional hub for specialized heart treatment.
