Gender Ministry to Launch System for Monitoring Business-Related Human Rights
The Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development is in the process of developing a Management Information System on Business and Human Rights to improve the reporting of human rights violations by businesses.
According to the Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Betty Amongi, there are plans to introduce awards for businesses that perform well in upholding human rights. This initiative aims to encourage businesses to continue respecting human rights as they operate.
Minister Amongi disclosed this during the opening of the 6th Annual Symposium on Business and Human Rights in Uganda, held at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala.
The conference brings together government agencies, civil society organizations, private sector players, and development partners for roundtable discussions aimed at promoting human rights protection within business practices.
The symposium also focuses on Pillar II of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. It aims to strengthen the positive role of business enterprises in implementing the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights, along with other human rights standards and principles embedded in new and emerging national, regional, and international frameworks.
“While business enterprises remain a strong partner in advancing respect for human rights in Uganda, empirical evidence shows gaps compromising their ability to deliver positive outcomes,” Minister Amongi noted.
She further explained that these gaps include inadequate capacities and tools for businesses concerning human rights and a lack of innovation to ensure effective respect for human rights in business operations.
