The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has commended the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for showcasing its best qualities—precision, discipline, time management and teamwork among others.
The CDF made these remarks during the inaugural CDF Inter-forces Drill Competitions at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where various UPDF units demonstrated their skills and expertise through a series of military drills.
Gen Kainerugaba likened military drills to music in the civilian context—a universal language understood by all, emphasizing that even those without a military background can appreciate them.
He noted that world-renowned militaries, such as those of Britain, China, India, Russia, and Pakistan, should serve as inspiration for the UPDF to continually refine its drills and rank among the best.
The CDF thanked all participants for their tremendous effort, dedication, and serious approach to the exercise.
He praised their discipline, self-control, and pride in wearing the UPDF uniform, serving as soldiers, and representing Uganda.
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of precision, attention to detail, time management, teamwork, and camaraderie—qualities demonstrated throughout the drills.
Gen Kainerugaba urged commanders and unit leaders to rotate drill participants regularly, ensuring that the entire force benefits from this culture of excellence.
He declared that a new era has dawned for the UPDF—one committed to pursuing excellence in all fields, with drills being just one aspect.
Great emphasis, he noted, is being placed on professional military education at all levels, from officers and NCOs down to recruit training.
The CDF commended the organizing team, led by the Deputy CDF, for successfully executing the mission they were given.
Finally, he attributed the UPDF’s past and present achievements to the wise and strategic leadership of President Yoweri Museveni.
The event was attended by defense advisors and attaches from Russia, China, Rwanda, Egypt, Ethiopia, and other countries.
From Uganda, attendees included state ministers Balaam Barugahara (Children and Youth Affairs) and Lillian Aber (Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Affairs), along with NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong and a team of NRM CEC members.
Military leaders present included Deputy CDF Lt Gen Samuel Okiding, Commander Land Forces Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, Commander Air Force Charles Okidi, Commander SFC Maj Gen David Mugisha, and NEC CEO Lt Gen James Mugira, as well as former IGP Gen Kale Kayihura and other generals and senior officers.
Deputy CDF stated, “we have an army capable of defending the nation because of what has been exhibited through military qualities and values.”
The chief umpire of the competitions, Lt Gen (rtd) Nakibus Lakara, remarked that “what has been witnessed is evidence that UPDF is up there among the best.”
The overall competition winner was the Internal Security Organisation (ISO), followed by SFC, with ISO receiving Shs10 million and trophies.
Other winners in various drill categories were the Air Force and 4 Infantry Division among others.
The event, now part of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) annual calendar, aims to enhance discipline, teamwork, and professionalism within the forces.
