In a significant development for Uganda’s aviation, tourism, and trade sectors, Uganda Airlines has announced a new interline partnership with Air India, India’s leading global airline. This strategic agreement, effective August 25, 2024, according to Jenifer Bamuturaki, the CEO of Uganda Airlines, is set to create a vital bridge between Africa and the Indian subcontinent, offering seamless travel for passengers and opening up immense opportunities for Uganda’s economy.
The partnership, announced by Bamuturaki in an official statement released today, is a cornerstone of the airline’s broader strategy to expand its global reach. “It allows travelers to book a single ticket for a seamless journey from Entebbe International Airport to over 25 major destinations across India and other international hubs via Mumbai (BOM),” Bamuturaki said in the statement.
This, she noted, eliminates the need for multiple tickets, separate check-ins, and complex layovers, making travel more convenient and accessible. The agreement also provides a major boost to Air India’s extensive customer base, opening up the “Pearl of Africa” to travellers from across the world and Asia.
This interline agreement is expected to be a powerful catalyst for trade and investment between Uganda and India. India is one of Uganda’s largest trading partners, and this new air link will directly facilitate the movement of goods, business executives, and investors.

The single-ticket service to major Indian economic centres like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and others will streamline business travel and reduce logistical barriers. This could lead to increased foreign direct investment from India into Uganda’s key sectors such as manufacturing, technology, and agriculture.
The partnership also enhances Uganda’s position as a regional hub, making it easier for investors and traders from surrounding East African countries to connect to the vast Indian market.
Beyond trade, the partnership is set to unlock Uganda’s tourism potential as a major new source market. India’s outbound tourism market is one of the fastest-growing in the world, with an increasing number of travelers seeking unique, authentic, and high-value experiences.
Uganda’s rich biodiversity, including its world-renowned mountain gorillas, unique wildlife safaris, and stunning landscapes, aligns perfectly with this demand. The new direct access to Uganda via Air India’s network will make the country a more attractive destination for millions of potential tourists from cities like Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Kolkata.
The agreement will not only boost tourist numbers but also strengthen cultural ties, fostering a greater exchange of ideas, people, and experiences between the two nations.
In a related development, Cynthia Mpoza’s promotion to Assistant Manager – Legal and Board Affairs at Uganda Airlines highlights the airline’s commitment to strengthening its internal governance and strategic capacity as it embarks on these high-stakes international partnerships.
