Four Arrested in Nansana for Dumping Rubbish in Water Channel

National Environment Management Authority (NEMA),and its law enforcement team have arrested four people for their dumping domestic waste into a water channel at Nsumbi Zone, Kyebando Parish, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.

The arrests made on Wednesday followwd the circulation of a viral social media clip depicting the illicit act.

Among those detained are Ndagire Mariam, a 36-year-old housewife residing in Nsumbi Zone, and Nakavubu Moreen, a 28-year-old housewife from the same area and two other schoo going teenagers  aged 15 and 13. All suspects were apprehended during an enforcement operation conducted on May 8th, 2024.

According to Naome Karekaho, the manager public and coperate affairs at NEMA the incident, which caught the attention of authorities after its online dissemination, revealed the critical issue of environmental conservation and waste management in the region.

“There was a public outrage about management of waste and dumping rubbish thereof which prompted NEMA to swing into action and arrest the suspects and they will be prosecuted .”said Karekaho

The suspects allegedly committed the offence of littering waste contrary to section 97(1) (4) & (9) of the National Environment Act (NEA).
They will be produced in court on Thursday and charged, according to Act.

Karekaho noted that the NEMA-led initiative demonstrates a proactive stance towards combating environmental violations and safeguarding community health.
