Floating Island Crisis Paralyzes Fishing in Kyotera District

Fishermen operating from Kansensero landing site in Kyotera district are urging the government and the Office of the Prime Minister to clear the floating island that has spread across the shores of the lake, making fishing challenging.

According to the fishermen, their boats cannot move from the landing site or be hired out due to the thickness of the floating island, which is impacting their fishing business.

Peter Sasira, the former speaker of Kyotera district, stated that the fishermen have been unable to fish or hire out their boats for two weeks because the floating island has invaded the lake, bringing fishing and transportation activities to a standstill.

Sasira also revealed that the fishermen have to pay between UG.X 70,000 and UG.X 100,000 to use boats from unaffected landing sites.

“The fishermen have to pay these large sums to clear a path to the other side of the lake for fishing, but currently lack the funds,” Sasira stated. ”

They hoped the floating island would dissipate within a week, but unfortunately, it persists, severely affecting their livelihoods,” he added.

Sasira urged the Office of the Prime Minister to intervene promptly, emphasizing that fishing is the primary source of income for the fishermen at the Kansensero landing site.

With a population exceeding 30,000, most residents rely on fishing-related activities, all of which are now at a standstill, making their livelihoods extremely challenging.
