FDC’s Amuriat, Nandala Seek Re-Election As The Duo Is Nominated
The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has duly nominated the incumbent president, Patrick Amuriat, and the Secretary-General, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, for re-election in their respective positions.
The duo on Wednesday returned nomination forms to party offices in Najjanankumbi. This is ahead of the party’s National Executive Committee elections scheduled for October 6. The meeting intends to attract over 1000 delegates from across the country to elect members who will serve a new term.
Nathan Nandala Mafabi, who lost a previous bid for the FDC presidency, expressed his decision to seek re-election as Secretary-General.
He declared his unwavering commitment to democratic principles and his opposition to any form of “backdoor politics.” Mafabi emphasized his dedication to upholding the party’s democratic ideals.
Incumbent party president, Patrick Amuriat, was also nominated alongside Jack Sabiiti, an aspiring party chairman. Amuriat firmly declared his intention to retain his current position.
However, the political landscape within the FDC remains shaky following a decision by a section of the current FDC National Executive Council to suspend both Amuriat and Mafabi from the party.
In an extra ordinary council meeting held on Tuesday this week, a faction opposed to the leadership of Amuriat and Nandala appointed Kampala Lord Mayor and Deputy President central, Erias Lukwago as the interim party president.
The conference yielded other important decisions. The FDC Katonga faction members led by founder Dr. Kiiza Besigye and National Chairman Wasswa Birigwa resolved to extend the leadership of the party’s organs by an additional six months, effective from October 8, 2023.
The move raised questions about the party’s internal dynamics and future direction.
FDC spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda announced that the party also is determined to establish an interim electoral commission in addition to disbanding the recently held elections.
Also Treasurer General Geoffrey Ekanya was replaced by his deputy Francis Mwijukye, and Harold Kaija, the deputy secretary-general, were appointed to assume their roles. Toterebuka Boniface, the party’s Electoral Commission Chairman, who was replaced by an interim leadership.
The Delegates Conference, held at Katonga Road, unfolded against a backdrop of heavy police deployment, with some delegates reportedly denied access to the venue.
This contentious gathering took place just a day after a court decision had halted the FDC extraordinary delegates conference, further complicating the party’s internal proceedings.
