FDC Responds As Gov’t Extends LC1, 2 Polls

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has urged the judiciary to alternate the use of introduction letters from the Local Council One chairperson for National Identity cards as a prerequisite for granting bail.

This development comes as the government extended elections for LCI and 2  posts on grounds that there is no money to conduct polls. The government has proposed extending the term for LC’s  because monies were not set aside th. The electoral commission requires over 60 billion shillings to carry out the elections countrywide.

FDC says the LCI office expires on July 10, therefore making their work illegal or irrelevant, noting that the offices are important because these are the leaders nearest to the people.

Kikonyogo told journalists at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi on Monday that the biometric systems already posses details of someone as indicated in their National ID’s.

“We are all aware that if you don’t have an LC1 letter, you cannot get bail, we are envisaging a situation where you apply for bail, get a letter from the LCI and the representative of the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (ODPP)will tell you that letter is invalid because the office expired. So they should not take this letter as a joke because people could stat longer in prison”

He adds that the same office has been central when it comes to making land agreements and the purchase and sell of the same.

“LC1 ‘s sign as witnesses to land sale or purchase. You may take you land tile to court after some years and someone can challenge you that the LC1 who signed on that agreement was expired by then rendering it null and void. The LC courts are also doing well in villages. If they expire what will happen to those courts.” he adds
