FDC, NUP Clash Over Shadow Cabinet Appointments
The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has written a protest letter to their counterparts of the National Unity Platform (NUP) over the appointment of some of their Members of Parliament into the shadow cabinet.
The party president Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat said they were not consulted before making appointments as required by the law.
“There are procedures when you’re appointing members of another party in the shadow cabinet, a process which was omitted,” he added.
He noted that the party’s secretary-general has already written to the Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga and his party over the matter and are still waiting for feedback.
Mpuuga released a list of 30 MPs who were appointed in the shadow cabinet, with seven members from FDC.
They include Gilbert Olanya, Ann Adeke Ebaju, Francis Mwijukye, Asinasi Nyakato, Yusuf Nsibambi, Timothy Batuwa, and Atkins Katusabe.
Since 2006, FDC has been taking the position of the Leader of Opposition due to having the biggest number of opposition MPs until January’s election where NUP picked up 57 seats while FDC got 32.
“We know as the party what it feels like to those members who were appointed. They must be cognizant of the law to take up the positions. We must stick to procedures,” Amuriat added.
He noted that the party is ready to work with other forces of change provided everything is within the law.
“We are not saying that appointing our members in the shadow cabinet is bad, but we must follow the law. They should have had the courtesy to inform us to that effect,” he noted.
