FDC Najjanankumbi, Condemns KCCA for Kiteezi Landfill Tragedy

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has criticized the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) for their mismanagement of the Kiteezi landfill, which led to a tragic collapse on the morning of Saturday, August 10, 2024, resulting in the loss of innocent lives.

Walid Mulindwa Lubega, the Deputy Secretary of Publicity in charge of publications and documentation at FDC, highlighted that KCCA failed to address the issue of the landfill reaching full capacity back in 2015. He emphasized that this negligence has put the lives of nearby residents at significant risk, and the recent incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of ignoring public safety and environmental concerns.

“We strongly urge the government to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to those affected by this disaster,” Lubega stated. “This should include the provision of shelter and food, psychosocial support, as well as the relocation and resettlement of those living near the landfill.”

Lubega also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the collapse and urged the authorities to take preventive measures to avoid similar tragedies in the future.

While addressing media at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Lubega recommended the immediate closure of the Kiteezi landfill to prevent further risks.

He also proposed the development of a comprehensive waste management system, the implementation of more efficient waste collection and disposal methods, investment in modern waste-to-energy technologies, and the promotion of recycling and composting initiatives, among other solutions.

In the same vein, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the spokesperson of the FDC Katonga faction, called on the government to compensate all victims of the deadly collapse at Kiteezi.
