FDC Katonga Group Set for Crucial Grassroots Elections Amidst Internal Tensions

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga group is gearing up for the grassroots elections scheduled this weekend on December 8, 2023. This announcement comes after a similar exercise conducted by the Najjanankumbi branch, resulting in the election of several leaders.

Michael Kabaziguruka, the Electoral Commission Chairperson for the Katonga group, underscored the significance of these elections as they mark the commencement of the party’s roadmap. These grassroots elections play a crucial role in shaping the leadership structure at the village, cell, and branch levels for the Mainstream, Women, and Youth structures.

Despite Amuriat being a suspended leader, Michael Kabaziguruka assured, “The elections begin this weekend,” emphasizing the commitment to the electoral process despite internal challenges.

The upcoming elections reveal tensions between the Katonga and Najjanankumbi groups . Kabaziguruka issued a warning to the Najjanankumbi group , expressing concerns about reported attempts to mobilize FDC members against the December 9th elections. He stated, “Let them not interfere with our activities; this is the legal branch of the FDC,” emphasizing the importance of each branch respecting the autonomy of the other.

The Katonga group views the elections as an opportunity to reunite previously suspended members due to indiscipline. Kabaziguruka extended an open invitation, saying, “Our doors are wide open; come back home.” Among the leaders who faced suspension were Ingrid Turinawe in Rukungiri, Winnie Babihuga in Rukungiri, and Asiimwe Robert in Nakawa, among others.

The grassroots elections hold the promise of not only shaping local leadership but also fostering unity within the party. Despite internal challenges, the FDC Katonga group remains focused on its objectives, emphasizing the importance of a democratic and inclusive electoral process.
