FDC Katonga Faction Suspends Party President Amuriat, Secretary Gen. Nandala

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga faction has resolved in an extra ordinary delegate’s conference to suspend Party President Patrick Oboi Amuriat and the Secretary General, Nandala Mafabi, among others.

These developments unfolded during an extraordinary National Delegates Conference held on September 19, 2023, at the Katonga offices. Despite facing significant opposition from the police, who were heavily deployed, the conference made several significant decisions.

The conference also resolved to suspend and investigate the Treasurer General Geoffrey Ekanya and his colleagues over their actions.

During their suspension, FDC Deputy Chairperson Lukwago,Deputy Secretary General Harold Kaija and Deputy Treasurer Francis Mwijukye, would temporarily assume their roles.

Furthermore, they extended the leadership of various FDC party organs for an additional six months beyond October 8, 2023.

The conference witnessed the presence of prominent FDC figures, including National Chairman Wasswa Birigwa and Dr. Kizza Besigye.

Party spokesman Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda presented seven resolutions, one of which called for the establishment of an interim electoral commission to oversee party elections.

“We wrote to them to provide security at our conference and they said they were unable. So we also told them that we don’t need their security. So I wonder what they want,” he told journalists, insisting that the conference will go on.” he asked

Additionally, the delegates annulled the elections organized by Toterebuka Bamwenda, adding complexity to the situation.

The conference itself took place amidst heightened security, with police preventing several delegates from reaching the venue. Originally, the conference was supposed to be held at Nature’s Green Beach Resort in Busabala, but access to the venue was cut off by the police.

These developments followed a court injunction issued against the FDC Extraordinary Delegates Conference.

Ssemujju expressed bewilderment regarding the police’s involvement in what he considered internal party matters and remained adamant that the conference would proceed.

Deputy Treasurer Francis Mwijukye accused Secretary General Nandala Mafabi and President Patrick Amuriat of actively obstructing the conference from the outset.

He claimed that the court injunction had been premeditated and raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest, suggesting that the judge who issued it might be related to Nandala.

In response to these events, National Chairman Wasswa Birigwa questioned the motives of Nandala Mafabi and Patrick Amuriat, who had distanced themselves from the conference, asserting that it was not part of the party’s planned activities or budget.

The party is currently split into two factions with one faction led by Amuriat and Nandala Mafabi while the other group is led by former FDC President Kizza Besigye, Kampala City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, and Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda.

The Civil Division Judge Lady Justice Esta Nambayo on Friday issued the interim order blocking the conference.

On Wednesday, the Police’s Director of Operations, Assistant Inspector General of Police, John Nuwagira, said that the police will not provide security for the delegates’ conference.

Nuwagira explained that the police received Birigwa’s letter seeking security protection for the summoned delegates’ conference on Monday this week. However, he also said that on Tuesday another letter was received from the party’s Secretary General Nandala Mafabi challenging the conference.
