FDC Katonga Faction Concludes Consultative Meetings

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga faction has concluded its national consultative meetings ahead of the delegates’ conference, which will decide on the formation of a new political party.

In March, the faction, led by Kampala Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago, embarked on national consultative meetings to determine their future course after breaking away from the party leadership at Najjanankumbi.

Since then, the faction has held consultative meetings in various districts, including Busia, Wakiso, Rukungiri, Masindi, Hoima, Lira, Gulu, Mityana, Masaka, Kotido, Soroti, Amuria, Kitgum, West Nile, Ankole, Kigezi, and Mbale, among others.

Dr. Kizza Besigye and Ambassador Wasswa Birigwa held their final meeting at Fatima Hall in Luwero town to consult with leaders from Nakaseke, Nakasongola, and Luwero on their next steps after breaking away from the Najjanankumbi leadership.

During the consultative meeting, Sseguya Matovu, the FDC Katonga Chairman for Nakaseke, presented a resolution from the district. Members urged the faction not to form a new party out of anger but to create a pressure group and join other forces of change to capture power.

In Luwero district, members could not present a common resolution; some supported forming a new political party, while others opposed it, arguing that it might not help liberate the country. Some FDC loyalists were concerned about losing their identity with the party they had supported for years.

In Nakasongola, the FDC leaders, led by Solomon Basirika, the faction chairperson, presented a resolution where members supported forming a political party, stating that the Najjanankumbi leadership is irredeemable and under captivity.

Besigye told the leaders that liberating the country should not depend on forming a new political party. However, he explained that a political party is needed to accommodate two groups within the struggle: those who need party tickets to contest for elective positions and those who seek a change in leadership.

Ambassador Wasswa Birigwa, the FDC Katonga National Chairman, stated that the consultations have concluded after the leadership traversed regions across the country. All delegates will convene on August 2nd to vote on the way forward. Birigwa noted that all varying resolutions from the regions will be presented at the conference, and the majority decision will determine whether to form a new political party or not.
