FDC Forced To Apologize Over Sectarian Tweet

Opposition political party Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has come under fire after using sectarian sentiments in a tweet directed at deputy attorney general Mwesigwa Rukutana.

Rukutana was recently pictured carrying a gun as he grazed his cows at his country home.

The picture drew mixed reactions with some Ugandans criticizing him for openly carrying the riffle while others said it was okay since his gun is licensed and that he had not used it to commit any crime.

However, it was a tweet from the FDC that rubbed several Ugandans on social media the wrong.

“A man (Mwesigwa Rukutana, Deputy Attorney General of #Uganda) grazing his cattle the Karamoja style in Ankole. Will UPDF that disarmed Karamojongs move to disarm Banyankore who graze cattle with guns?” tweeted FDC.

However, with several people questioning the sectarian nature of referring to tribe, the same twitter handle apologized for recklessness, claiming the tweet had not met the values of the party!

“As a political party, we work daily towards uniting Ugandans as one people. The tweet below did fall below the values and the principles we hold as a party and we apologise sincerely for the use of Banyankole people as a whole and to all Ugandans,” the apologetic tweet reads.

It did not stop condemanation from social media users nevertheless.

“How can you put all Banyankore in the same group , we Banyankore we graze cows using sticks, it’s a shame to find a big opposition party still refer to people according to clan/tribe, #Endtribalism,” Chris M. Tusiime tweeted.
