FDC Crisis Deepens: Najjanankumbi Rejects Splinter Group’s Plans to Dissolve Party
The internal conflict within the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) continues to escalate, with Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi dismissing resolutions from a recent delegates’ meeting organized by a splinter group based in Katonga.
This meeting, led by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago as interim president, proposed forming a new political vehicle ahead of the 2026 general elections. The group set a six-month timeline to unveil this new entity and also called for the dissolution of the FDC, as well as the extension of the current leadership’s tenure to oversee this transition.
Katonga is associated with founding members like Dr. Kizza Besigye.
However, Mafabi has strongly rejected these resolutions, asserting that the Katonga faction lacks the legal authority to dissolve the FDC or call a delegates’ conference.
“Meetings of the party can only be called by authorized office bearers, of the Party, of which one Mr.Wasswa Biriggwa and Mr. Lukwago Erias, who have been masquerading as Party Chairman and Party President respectively are not. This alleged Party “Delegates’ meeting” is nothing but a meeting of attention seeking, like minded, disgruntled rabble-rousers who should be ignored.” he said
He stated that the FDC is a duly registered party with the Electoral Commission of Uganda, and only recognized office bearers have the mandate to organize official meetings.
“No member in the Katonga sect has the mandate to dissolve the party because they are not official bearers. FDC is a Duly registered party with the EC, and returns of office bearers are duly filed, of which none of the so called “officers” of the party is an office bearer as they claim to be.” he noted
Mafabi also accused Lukwago of incompetence as Lord Mayor of Kampala, referencing the Kiteezi tragedy as an example of failed leadership. He urged the public not to be misled by what he described as political posturing by the Katonga group.
“It is surprising that Mr. Lukwago and a few Councilors of KCCA, can find time to perpetuate political jokes, without first clarifying when they will finally start working to better the lives of the people of Kampala Capital City.” Mafabi claimed
Despite the ongoing internal strife, Mafabi stated that the party’s leadership continues its nationwide mobilization efforts.
The party has scheduled its next activities in Jinja on Saturday, August 24, 2024, as it presses forward with its political agenda.
