Singer Clever J and his wife have resumed their long-standing disputes, with the singer accusing her of practicing witchcraft.

The couple, who share two children, have been together for 20 years, but the relationship has been marred by allegations of domestic abuse. Clever J’s wife claims he has physically assaulted her, including beating her with an iron bar, and subjected her to ongoing emotional distress due to his repeated accusations of witchcraft.

Clever J now wants his wife to leave their home, but she has refused, stating she has nowhere else to go. She revealed that in the past, she had requested Shs20 million to help her secure alternative accommodation, but he did not provide it. Even when she asked for a modest Shs200,000, he still declined.

She believes Clever J is in need of therapy, as she feels his behavior suggests he is not mentally stable. According to her, no one in Clever J’s family, including his father, dares to advise him because they are afraid of him.

The couple has faced similar issues before. In 2023, Clever J allowed her to return home on the condition that she would cease practicing witchcraft.

Clever J, whose real name is Gerald Muwonge, was born in Nsambya and raised by his father, John Bukenya, after his mother abandoned him at a young age.

He dropped out of school in Senior Two at Nagalama Islamic Secondary School but had already shown an interest in music, leading school choirs and later living with the Mayanja brothers, which further exposed him to the industry.

His close relationship with Chameleone began when he helped him collect clay for his moulding work. However, Clever J eventually left the Mayanja household after Chameleone’s mother, Prossy Musoke, disapproved of him.

Clever J recorded his first song, Celina, under Leone Island, with Chameleone helping to produce his first three tracks. However, the two parted ways after Chameleone barred him from performing at the Fire Base vs Leone Island music battle, prompting Clever J to cut ties with him.

His breakthrough came with the hit song Manzi Wa Nani. At one point, he was managed by Jeff Kiwanuka, but their professional relationship ended in 2009.
