Entebbe International Airport Expansion Nears Completion
The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority has reported that the ongoing efforts to upgrade and expand Entebbe International Airport, including the construction of a new 20,000 square meters terminal building, have reached 90% completion. Once finished in 2024, this new terminal will increase the airport’s capacity from 2 million to at least 3.5 million passengers annually, according to UCAA Director General Fred Bamwesigye.
Bamwesigye emphasized that this expansion is necessary to accommodate the growing number of passengers. In March 2024 alone, Entebbe International Airport handled 80,719 arriving and 91,271 departing passengers, totaling 171,990 international passengers, with an average of 5,548 passengers daily. The airport has experienced increasing traffic, with over 6,000 passengers per month in the previous three months and a total of 1.93 million passengers in 2023 compared to 1.8 million in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ongoing construction includes interconnecting the drainage system to accommodate the new developments, with all pending works scheduled for completion this year. The public is urged to bear temporary inconveniences as these projects are finalized for an improved passenger experience. Additionally, the public is asked to refrain from sharing negative images that could impact tourism.
Pending works also include the expansion of Apron 1, nearing 95% completion. Earlier completed works under the same project include the resurfacing of runways and taxiways, construction of a new cargo center, and resurfacing of Aprons 2 and 4. The modified terminal building, opened to the public on January 10, 2024, provided a better environment for delegates attending the NAM/G77+ China Summit and continues to serve arriving and departing passengers.
Furthermore, the car parking was resurfaced and completed in March 2023.
