English Premier League Matches Postponed To Mourn Queen Elizabeth

Fans of the English Premier League across the globe will miss anticipated matches in this weekend’s fixtures following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II who died on Thursday. 

The League secretariat announced the postponement after a meeting in which Premier League clubs paid tribute to the fallen Queen. Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters, said that the clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to England.

“To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game. As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication,” reads the statement.

The decision affects 10 fixtures, among them; Fulham FC which was due to host Chelsea in the North London derby in Saturday’s early kickoff, Crystal Palace against Manchester United, Arsenal against Everton, Manchester City against Tottenham, Liverpool against Wolves and Westham against Newcastle, among others.

The England Football Association also announced that all other Football fixtures between September 9 and September 11 across all leagues in England are postponed to a later date. Other leagues include Barclays women’s super league, Barclays Women’s championship, and the Vitality women’s FA cup among others.   

The Association further stated that all flags at Wembley stadium, the home of the England National team and St. George’s Park will continue to fly at half-mast over the weekend. 

In the same development, the Scottish FA also announced that the Scottish Premiership Football League and other leagues organized within Scotland have agreed that professional football matches will be postponed.  

However, it is yet to be known whether more matches won’t be cancelled, with the Queen’s funeral expected to take place on Sunday, September, 18 or Monday, September 19, 2022.
