Local leaders in the town of Embresso, located in the southwestern region of Mogadishu, have expressed their profound gratitude to the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF), working in close collaboration with the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), for their unwavering support towards the Somali people.
Major Peter Mugisa, the UPDF Public Information Officer for Sector 1 in Somalia, revealed that Coddi Xosan Xusan, who serves as the Mayor of Embresso and also holds the position of Deputy Commissioner of Barawe district, has extended his appreciation to the Uganda People’s Defense Forces, specifically Battle Group XXXVIII, operating under ATMIS. This appreciation comes in light of their invaluable assistance to the people of Somalia, particularly in Embresso, where they provided earthmoving machinery to prepare the ground for the construction of a Level IV hospital.
Xusan conveyed his gratitude, stating, “Your tireless efforts in safeguarding the prevailing peace and preventing disruptive elements from causing harm cannot be underestimated. You are now assisting us in leveling the foundation ground for the hospital construction. Shukran.”
Colonel Christopher Berochan, the Commander of Battle Group XXXVIII, explained that although the responsibility for hospital construction lies with the leadership of Barawe district, ATMIS stands in solidarity with the people of Barawe in their endeavor to enhance their healthcare services.
Col. Berochan emphasized, “Supporting the people of Barawe in realizing their developmental potential is a fundamental aspect of ATMIS’s mandate, and we are fully committed to ensuring that the Somali people have access to essential social amenities.”
In addition to their efforts in countering Al-Shabaab, ATMIS forces have actively contributed to various social infrastructure projects aimed at promoting civil-military cooperation. These initiatives include the expansion and maintenance of roads, rehabilitation of culverts, the provision of medical care, and, in June 2023, the support from Battle Group XXXVIII in leveling the foundation ground for the construction of a youth recreation center in Barawe district.
