The Electoral Commission has reminded the public that today, 10th June 2025, marks the final day for the nomination of candidates for Village Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Committees across the country.
The nomination exercise, which started on 2nd June, is targeting three key categories , Youths aged 18 to 30, Older Persons aged 60 and above, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) who are eligible to contest and serve on the village-level SIGs Committees ahead of the 2025/2026 general elections.
According to Julius Muchunguzi, the Electoral Commission Spokes person, officials from the Electoral Commission urged all eligible individuals to present themselves at their respective nomination centres before the close of business today.
“This is a critical opportunity for special interest groups to take part in shaping leadership structures from the grassroots level. We call upon all eligible persons to seize this chance and ensure their voices are represented,” he said.
Julius Mutunguzi, the spokesperson for the Ugandan Electoral Commission, reiterated the crucial nature of these elections, emphasizing their foundational role in the 2025-2026 general election roadmap.
“These special interest group elections, starting from the village level, are very critical because they are successive and progressive in nature,” Mutunguzi explained.
He stressed that without participation at the grassroots village level, individuals cannot advance to leadership roles within these groups at higher administrative tiers, including parish, sub-county, town council, district, and national levels.
The exercise is part of the wider Electoral Commission’s roadmap for SIGs elections that stretch from June to August 2025, culminating in the formation of SIGs committees from the village to national level.
The nomination process, which commenced on June 2nd, has seen EC staff available at all sub-county headquarters, division headquarters, and town councils from 9:00 AM daily.
Next on the electoral calendar will be the conduct of candidates’ campaign meetings between 12th and 14th June, followed by polling for Village Older Persons Committees on 16th June, PWD Committees on 17th June, and Youth Committees on 19th June 2025.
Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has consistently emphasized the importance of inclusivity in Uganda’s democratic process, urging all stakeholders to support the peaceful and timely execution of this electoral roadmap.
