Education Committee Urges MOE to Recind Phasing Out Nursing Courses
The report also suggests that the government should conduct comprehensive studies before making similar decisions in the future.
The Committee on Education and Sports has urged thorough research before phasing out certificate and diploma courses in nursing, as stated in a report presented to the House on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, by Hon. Phillips Lokwang.
The report also suggests that the government should conduct comprehensive studies before making similar decisions in the future. “The Ministry of Education should have considered reviewing the curriculum for comprehensive nursing courses to enrich it,” Lokwang emphasized.
He stressed the need for the government to develop a policy guiding the phase-out process within the education and sports sub-programme.
Kimanya – Kibonera Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Abed, called for a detailed report from the sector minister regarding the decision to pause comprehensive nursing courses. “I have not received clear communication from the minister, and I urge him to address the recent developments regarding the courses,” he said.
Aringa North MP, Hon. Godfrey Onzima, emphasized the importance of not rushing to phase out such programs, calling for an assessment of validity, viability, and relevance before making any decision.
The Minister of State for Higher Education, Hon. John Chrysistom Muyingo, mentioned that the government halted recruitment and training of comprehensive nursing graduates in 2020. However, he indicated that a review of the decision will be conducted.
