East African Court Set To Hear Cases in Uganda
The Minister for East African Affairs Rebecca Kadaga has announced that the EAC court will handle newly filed cases and deliver rulings on various cases filed against member states throughout the month of November.
Kadaga also the First Deputy Prime says Uganda is the second country within the region to host the court after Bujumbura in Burundi last year.
Kadaga says five cases are ready for judgment, eleven for hearing and five others for pretrial.
The East African Court of Justice will hear among other cases one for the city lawyer Male Mabirizi who is in jail serving his punishment in Kitalya prison.
In January 2022, Mabirizi petitioned the East African Court of Justice seeking to declare the trial of satirical Novelist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija on offensive communication charges a nullity. Kakwenza has since fled the country and sought refuge in Europe.
Kadaga says all cases will be handled at commercial court by the panel of justices and the public will be allowed to hear these cases.
The court is one of the organs of the East African Community bloc and has been based in Arusha for the last 20 years, however, it was agreed last year that the court should start convening in other East African Countries.
