DP Women’s League Calls for Law to Pay Housewives’ Salary
The Chairperson of the Democratic Party Women’s League and the Inter-party Women’s Platform Aisha Waligo has urged the Ugandan Parliament to introduce legislation that would mandate payment for domestic work performed by women.
Speaking at a press conference in Kampala on March 12, 2024, Waliggo emphasized the importance of recognizing and compensating women for the significant amount of unpaid domestic labor they undertake. She stated that the DP Women’s League is committed to lobbying parliament to enact a bill ensuring fair compensation for women’s domestic work.
Waliggo highlighted the disparity between men and women in terms of access to resources and opportunities, citing statistics from the World Bank indicating low rates of property ownership and limited access to credit among women. She stressed the need for legislative action to address these inequalities and empower women economically.
In addition to economic concerns, Waliggo criticized the government for neglecting women’s health, emphasizing the importance of investing in women’s well-being for the overall development of society.
Her remarks coincided with International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8 to recognize women’s contributions to society and address the challenges they face. In Uganda, this year’s Women’s Day celebrations took place in Katakwi district under the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.”
