Police in Entebbe are holding a house maid over the death of a baby boy, killed by a house dog.
The incident happened on Monday March 18, 2024 at Canaan Estate, Mawugulu cell, Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District at around 10:00 am.
A peaceful day turned into a nightmare as the dog belonging to Dr. Andrew Obuku, former president of the Uganda Medical Association,(UMA) viciously attacked and killed his baby boy named Raphael.
According to police reports, the baby was left in the care of a newly recruited housemaid, Nuwarinda Sharon, while his parents were away.
Nuwarinda says she witnessed the dog, normally tamed inside the house, suddenly turning aggressive. Despite her efforts to protect the child, the dog overpowered her, fatally biting the baby’s head and causing severe injuries to her thigh.
She explains that the toddler was placed on the veranda while she did her house chores until she realised the dog had left its kennel to attack him. At first she grabbed the baby but vicious dog managed to pull him back , mauling him in her presence.
Nuwarinda further explained that she screamed for help alerting her neighbours who rushed to the scene . According to police the police statement it was already too late to save Raphael by the time the neighbours arrived as they struggled to get past the closed gate.
The body was transported to Kisubi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) from both Entebbe and Kisubi Police stations visited the area and examined the site, collecting samples and gathering evidence.
Investigations revealed alarming facts about the dog’s behavior, including previous instances of hostility towards neighbors.
The poorly secured kennel allowed the dog to escape, exacerbating the tragedy. Furthermore, the locked gates of Dr. Obuku’s residence hindered neighbors’ efforts to intervene.
They also observed that the dog’s aggression, particularly its removal of internal organs from the baby’s head, suggests underlying health issues, possibly indicating sickness.
Raphael’s body was transferred to Kisubi Hospital and later to Mulago for a postmortem examination.
Meanwhile, Nuwarinda has been placed under safe custody at Entebbe Police Station.
