Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has urged leaders within the Mbarara Ecclesiastical Province Association (MEPA) to leverage church structures in the fight against poverty.
Speaking at the annual MEPA Pilgrimage at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, Tayebwa on Sunday, the chief pilgrim, emphasized the church’s authority, paralleling that of the government. He urged bishops to utilize administrative structures to teach people essential skills and combat poverty.
The Deputy Speaker also used the platform to advocate for unity, inclusiveness, and the courage to combat corruption. He called on Catholic bishops to guide their congregants involved in political leadership, stressing the impact political decisions can have on societal development.
MEPA, comprising dioceses like Kabale, Mbarara, Fort Portal, Hoima, and Kasese, held its pilgrimage under the leadership of Archbishop Lambert Bainomugisha. Tayebwa highlighted the potential of diocesan lands for sustaining initiatives aimed at eradicating poverty.
MEPA Chairperson Patrick Birungi, who is also the Executive Director of Uganda Development Corporation announced plans to establish a platform for CEOs from the Mbarara Ecclesiastical Province to enhance interaction, coordination, and partnerships in development.
