Davido’s Musical Journey: From Father’s Arrest to Presidential Recognition
Nigerian megastar Davido recounted how his father recognized the burgeoning success of his music career.
Speaking during an interview on Business Untitled, Davido delved into the early stages of his journey and his quest for his father’s approval to pursue music.
The Grammy nominee reminisced about departing from school in Atlanta to return to Nigeria and pursue his musical aspirations against his father’s wishes, which resulted in his affluent dad having him apprehended.
Reflecting on his father’s initial reaction, Davido remarked, “I don’t think he opposed my music aspirations; he just desired my success in whatever path I chose, given the blueprint he had for me.”
Describing his father’s unwavering support, Davido revealed, “He’s incredibly supportive and meticulously examines every aspect. My dad even vets my albums meticulously. After completion, I send him the tracks, and he provides feedback on each.”
Davido amusingly recounted how his father coined the moniker “Davido” and the comical incident of his father having him detained after his unsanctioned return to Nigeria at 17 for his inaugural concert. “He simply wanted me to complete my education,” Davido quipped about his father’s insistence on obtaining a university degree.
When queried about when his father acknowledged the magnitude of his musical success, Davido disclosed, “It was when my song ‘Dami Duro’ became the president’s ringtone.”
Although Davido didn’t specify the president or country, it’s likely a reference to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who served from 2010 to 2015.
In addition to his musical endeavors, Davido outlined his plans as a burgeoning entrepreneur.
He divulged his venture into the production realm with Coco House, a media establishment catering to creatives.
Furthermore, Davido expressed his intention to venture into the realm of cryptocurrency.
