Court has remanded Martha Nkwanzi, daughter of the late businessman Henry Katanga, to Luzira Prison for allegedly destroying evidence related to her father’s murder.
Her mother, Molly Katanga, is also implicated and under criminal summons. Two others, the family’s Shamba boy and a medical practitioner, are accused of aiding the family in evading justice.
Nkwanzi appeared in court, seeking to enter a plea, but the prosecution objected, arguing that the charge sheet involves a murder case, which only the High Court can handle. Despite a lengthy debate, the court ruled in favor of Nkwanzi taking a plea.
The prosecution insists that the High Court should guide the case due to the mixture of capital and non-capital offenses. The court, however, asserts its jurisdiction, allowing Nkwanzi to deny the charges. Her request for bond is deferred until the outcome of a pending criminal revision application.
The widow, Molly Katanga, awaits court appearance, and all accused individuals, connected to influential figures, are expected back in court on January 22, 2024. The families reportedly received assurance from a top government leader that justice will prevail.
