President Yoweri Museveni has clocked two million followers on Twitter, becoming the first individual Ugandan to reach the milestone. This means that he has attracted one million voters in less than two years because the NRM presidential candidate was again the first Ugandan to reach the one million mark in March 2019.

In April 2014, Museveni sent out his first tweet, nine years since the social media platform had been founded.

In his first tweet, the Ugandan leader saluted Kyambogo University students for overhauling a car engine to use ethanol.

Since then, Museveni has not looked back on the use of Twitter to make his communications to the public.

In his latest tweet, Museveni assures Ugandans that he will deliver the NRM campaign message safely without compromising the safety of the people amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The commitment to all our supporters is that we shall bring the message to you, but safely. Stay safe, do not tempt the pandemic. Here, I am leaving Balarege (a former stronghold of the LRA) in Otuke to Apac for our next schedule. #SecuringYourFuture,” Gen Museveni tweeted Wednesday morning.

The president has been not just active letting his followers know what he has been up to but also engages a lot through his letters, mostly addressed to the young people (Bazzukulu).

He also responds to specific tweets and gives feedback to his followers.

His Press Secretary Don Wanyama said last that that “He is a leader who keeps up with the times.”

Comparing Museveni with his political competitors, Kyadondo East’s Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine has 850,000 and is over 1.2M followers short of Museveni whereas ANT’s Mugisha Muntu has 110,000. Gen Henry Tumukunde has 5,800 while FDC’s Patrick Amuriat has 3,000 followers.
