Court Martial Acquits Senior Police Officers of Kidnapping Charges

Former Police Standard Unit Commandant SSP Nickson Agasirwe and six other senior police officers have been acquitted of charges of aiding and abetting the kidnapping of Rwandan refugees.

The decision was made by the General Court Martial (GCM) at Makindye in Kampala, chaired by Brig. Gen. Robert Freeman Mugabe.

The charges against Agasirwe and his co-accused were withdrawn on Monday, March 5, 2024. Alongside Agasirwe, the other officers cleared of charges include Col Atwooki Birakurataki Ndahura, ACP Herbert Muhangi, ASP Richard Ndaboine, ASP Patrick Muramira, AIP Jonas Ayebaza, and D/C Abel Kitagenda Muyomba.

The prosecution had accused the group of unlawfully kidnapping Jackson Kalemera, also known as Ndinga, and Lieutenant Joel Mutabazi, and delivering them to Rwanda without their consent.

Private Regina Nanzala, the state prosecutor, revealed that the withdrawal of charges was sanctioned by the UPDF Director of Prosecutions, Lt. Col Raphael Mugisha.
