The Buganda Road Magistrates Court has issued arrest warrants for Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Rubaga North former Parliamentary Candidate Samuel Lubega Mukaaku over failure to obey the summons.

Grade One Magistrate Asuman Muhumuza issued the arrest warrant after the prosecution led by State Attorney Ivan Kyazze applied to court, stating that the duo had severally missed proceedings without clear reason.

The two accused were supposed to appear in court on Thursday, but didn’t show up. Their lawyer Matovu Musa who was present in court said the duo had travelled out of the country. However, the prosecution protested the reason on grounds that the defense didn’t provide enough evidence to prove his clients travelled and didn’t seek permission for their movement.

The trial Magistrate Muhumuza therefore issued an arrest warrant against the duo because have also declined to adhere to criminal summons, besides missing court sessions. The presiding Magistrate also issued criminal summons atheir sureties.

Besigye and Mukaku were arrested in June 2022 during protests in down town Kampala, they were charged with inciting violence.

The prosecution alleges that on  June 14th, 2022 in Kikuubo, Shauriyako Parish, Kampala City, Besigye, and Mukaaku without lawful excuse made statements indicating that it would be desirable to demonstrate, which could cause violence and damage to property.
