Cabinet Extends Women’s Local Council Tenure

The Cabinet has decided to prolong the tenure of the women’s local council for an additional six months, commencing on January 6, 2024. The term of the women’s local council expired on August 23, 2022, necessitating new elections to fill leadership positions.

Earlier this year, the Uganda Electoral Commission issued guidelines for these elections; however, the plans were canceled due to insufficient funding. Speaking at the Media Center in Kampala today, the Minister of State for National Guidance, Godfrey Kabyanga, clarified that the extension was due to administrative issues.

Kabyanga emphasized potential post-election issues, such as election petitions, stating that the government needs to prepare for such matters in advance. “Elections are a very sensitive matter; they can generate a lot of petitions when you are not ready. That’s why we are postponing them until we are prepared to ensure a free and fair election,” Kabyanga explained.

This extension aligns with the postponements observed in the local council one (LC1) and local council two (LC 2) leadership elections, whose terms concluded in July 2022.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet has authorized CNOOC Uganda to produce liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the Kingfisher development areas. This initiative aims to prevent the release of gases into the atmosphere during the oil mining process.

The Commissioner of Midstream Petroleum, Geoffrey Ogwang, revealed that the LPG production facility will be established through a public-private partnership and is slated to conclude by 2025.
