Students of Bumasifwa Seed School in Bumasifwa Sub County in Sironko district engaged in spirited protest after missing learning for one week.
The violent lot of students damaged school property worth millions of Shillings, accusing the school authorities of deliberately failing teachers from coming to school to teach them for one week now. They damaged banana plantations and smashed windows among other properties.
Christine Nabugoda, the chairperson of the Parent’s Teachers Association (PTA) at Bumasifwa Seed Secondary School, says the school has been temporarily closed as the school authorities resolve issues with teachers.
She explains that teachers stopped reporting to school because they didnt receive payment from the funds sent to the school account by the government through the Universal Secondary Education-USE program.
Titus Wombilo, the Bumasifwa LC V councilor says the teachers have not received their lunch, transport allowances, and salaries for the past one and a half years.
He claims that the school leaders withdrew the funds meant to pay these teachers and other school activities and it is unclear how the money was spent.
Moses Nambale, the Sironko District Education Officer, confirmed that they are investigating the missing 56 million Shillings from the school account.
Stella Nambozo, the outgoing head teacher, said that all the teachers were paid until March.
