Bugiri CAO Interdicts Hospital Superintendent Over Theft

The Bugiri District Chief Administrative Officer, Martin Kisule, has interdicted the superintendent of Bugiri General Hospital.

The move comes in response to allegations of non-compliance with public service standing orders and misuse of authority, with claims that Abubakeri Nakendo, was involved in stealing government stores.

Reports surfaced last year when whistleblowers informed the Inspectorate of Government’s regional office in Jinja about health workers at Bugiri General Hospital allegedly pilfering government drugs and selling them at higher prices in private clinics. The whistleblowers asserted that the government supplies were consistently insufficient, mysteriously depleting within three days of delivery.

Concerns were also raised regarding discrepancies between recorded patient numbers at the hospital and the excessive quantities of drugs reportedly consumed within a three-day period.

Subsequently, the Inspectorate of Government initiated thorough investigations, with their findings pointing towards Nakendo as a central figure in the alleged misappropriation of government drugs.

Deputy Inspector General of Government, Anne Muhairwe, conducted an impromptu visit to Nakendo’s clinics on December 14, 2023.

The visit resulted in the recovery of government stores, including drugs, blood allocated for Bugiri General Hospital, and medical equipment. Nakendo, however, has since evaded authorities by switching off his known phone numbers and disappearing from his duty station.

In response to the situation, Muhairwe directed the Bugiri District Police Commander to locate Nakendo, who is currently in hiding. The Chief Administrative Officer, has instructed Nakendo to come out of hiding and immediately hand over his office to the District Health Officer. This move is aimed at facilitating a thorough investigation into the accusations against him.

Additionally, Nakendo has been prohibited from leaving the country without explicit permission from Kisule.
