Buganda Kingdom PM Pushes for Federal Governance Model

Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga, has reaffirmed the kingdom’s commitment to pursuing a Federal system of governance.

This system aims to share powers and resources between the central and regional governments, ensuring fair socioeconomic empowerment for everyone.

Mayiga said that this Federal system is vital for equitable development. He believes it will address the needs of all people and promote equal opportunities.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the renovated official residence of the Buddu County Chief at Ssaza grounds in Masaka City.

The traditional residence of the Buddu County Chief, known as Buddukiro, has a rich history. Built in 1935 during Kabaka Daudi Chwa II’s reign, it was taken over by the central government in 1967. However, it was returned to Buganda in 2013.

Jude Muleke, the current Buddu County Chief, reported that the house underwent significant repairs, costing over 287 million shillings. Despite being neglected for years while under Masaka district authorities, the house now stands as a proud symbol of the kingdom’s heritage.

Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, the MP for Nyendo-Mukungwe and Parliament Commissioner, revealed that voluntary fundraising efforts made the renovation possible. He sees this as a testament to the commitment of the kingdom’s subjects to its transformation.

Mpuuga said reclaiming Buganda’s properties still held by the central government. He, along with other MPs, is dedicated to advocating for a fair share of national resources to benefit the region.

Meanwhile, Katikkiro Mayiga also observed the disturbing state of messy homesteads, garbage-filled trading centers, and filthy business premises in Masaka. He advised that such unsightly conditions have no place in civilized societies.

He called on leaders at all levels to work tirelessly to uplift their communities.
