Buganda, Busoga Endorse Public Participation in National Census

In preparation for the upcoming National Population and Housing Census 2024, a delegation from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) led by the Chief Statistician and UBOS Executive Director, Dr. Mukiza Ndatira Mukiza, paid a courtesy visit to King Nadiope IV, HRH William Nadiope Gabula IV, the Kyabazinga of Busoga.

This visit is part of UBOS’s efforts to raise awareness and mobilize participation in the forthcoming census, scheduled to commence on May 9, 2024.

With over 100,000 trained enumerators and supervisors equipped with 120,000 tablets for a digitalized census exercise, UBOS is gearing up for a comprehensive and efficient data collection process spanning from May 9th to May 19th, 2024.

During the visit, Dr. Mukiza emphasized the importance of this courtesy call as part of UBOS’s national census publicity and awareness campaign, aiming to engage leaders and ensure theactive involvement of all citizens.

King Nadiope IV expressed his full support for NPHC, urging all his subjects to participate wholeheartedly in this national endeavor. His endorsement serves to encourage widespread participation and accurate data collection throughout Busoga.

In a similar vein, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has emphasized the significance of population census data in governmental planning and resource allocation. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the  31st Great Buganda Lukiiko at Bulange Mengo, the Katikkiro urged the public to actively partake in the census, stressing that comprehensive data collection is essential for effective governance.

“This is the best way that the government can cater for its citizens in Buganda and the country at large by getting data,” he said

Furthermore, the Katikkiro urged the government to consider districts with larger populations when distributing resources and providing services. He emphasized the need for equitable resource allocation, particularly highlighting districts like Mukono, Masaka,Kampala, and Wakiso, which contribute significantly to government revenue through taxes. The Katikkiro emphasized that these districts should benefit proportionally from their contributions, promoting value addition and efficient service delivery.

The forthcoming census plays a crucial opportunity for Uganda to gather accurate and comprehensive demographic data, essential for informed policymaking and development planning at both local and national levels. Through collaborative efforts and widespread participation, the government aims to ensure inclusive and effective governance based on reliable statistical insights.
