The body of 9-year-old Nanyonga Shanitah, who drowned in a water channel near her school in Kabuuma, Wakiso District, has been recovered by Police Marines with the assistance of the local community.
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday at 11:00 am when Shanitah, who had been escorted to school by her aunt, returned home to retrieve a forgotten pen. The deceased was a pupil at Kid’s Nest Nursery and Primary School.
According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, while crossing the water channel, located just 10 meters from her school, she reportedly slipped and was swept away by the strong current.
On Friday morning, her body was retrieved and transported to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination. Onyango says police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police on Thursday arrested the school director Kibirango Esther and the gateman Ssentongo Peter to aid in investigations.
The police commended the local community for their efforts in assisting with the search and recovery operation.
