Bobi Wine Escorted Home, Not Arrested: Kampala Police Clarifies

The Kampala Police has issued a statement to clarify the situation surrounding Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, the principal of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Contrary to initial reports of his arrest, the police confirmed that he was not detained but was instead escorted to his residence in Magere, Wakiso District.

News of Bobi Wine’s alleged detention spread rapidly after his arrival at Entebbe International Airport on Thursday at approximately 10:20 am. Videos circulated on various social media platforms showed two individuals in reflective jackets guiding Bobi Wine to a waiting car that swiftly drove him away.

Upon Bobi Wine’s arrival at Entebbe Airport from South Africa on a RwandAir plane at around 10 am, plainclothed security operatives approached him and placed him into a waiting car. The car then sped away from the airport, passing through Entebbe town and heading to his residence in Magere via the Entebbe Expressway.

In a statement released by the police, they clarified, “We wish to inform the public that the NUP President, Hon. Kyagulanyi Robert, was successfully escorted by our security team from Entebbe to his home in Magere. He reached his home around 11:20 am and is now with his family and friends. Disregard rumors of his arrest by propagandists.”

Meanwhile, normal business activities and movements along Entebbe road, within Kampala, and Gayaza are reported to be flowing smoothly.

Bobi Wine was indeed spotted at his heavily guarded Magere residence in the company of the Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, and his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi.
