Besigye Political Rally: Mobilizing Youth for Change, Not 2026 Candidacy

He remained hesitant about his plans, citing his age as a factor.

Four-time former presidential candidate, Colonel Dr. Kizza Besigye, has refuted claims that he intends to run again in the 2026 general election. Amidst chants and ululations from awaiting supporters, Besigye made his entrance into Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality on Saturday, with the crowd swelling as they proceeded to Kizinda playground in Ishaka town council.

Despite pressure from supporters for him to contest the presidency in 2026, Besigye, while addressing the crowd, remained hesitant about his plans, citing his age as a factor. “I don’t agree with those urging me to stand in the 2026 elections because I will be 70 by then.

Let’s mobilize now instead of waiting,” he insisted. Besigye urged the youth to initiate ground mobilization efforts in preparation to take over the government.

Buhweju County MP, Francis Mwijukye, emphasized the historical significance of the Katonga route, hinting at its potential as a pathway to State House.

Ingrid Turinawe, Virginia Plan Mugyenyi, and other party officials apologized to the crowd for supporting Patrick Oboi Amuriat in the previous election, acknowledging his betrayal of the FDC. Besigye, along with FDC Katonga members, is scheduled to proceed to Kasese to conclude their consultative meetings on Sunday.

Prior to this, Besigye, addressing his supporters in his home district of Rukungiri, expressed his return to political action after what he described as a “political holiday.” He reassured his supporters of his commitment, stating, “I am back in action and I’m starting from where I left off.” Besigye’s arrival in Rukungiri District was met with enthusiastic support, with hundreds of supporters on motorcycles accompanying him to Rukungiri main stadium.

At the stadium, Besigye consulted party supporters regarding the possibility of forming a new party following disagreements with the FDC leadership.

Notable figures such as the party’s district chairperson, Aloysius Mugarura, former Rukungiri municipality MP, Mugume Rolland Kaginda, and Rubabo County Member of Parliament, Naboth Namanya, were present.

The event attracted hundreds of supporters who lined the roads leading to Rukungiri town, waving and showing their support as Besigye flashed the FDC V sign.

Besigye emphasized the urgency for Ugandans to fight for their freedom to avoid remaining trapped in poverty.
