Former FDC leader, Dr Kizza Besigye, has been slapped with fresh treason charges at Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court.
Besigye was wheeled into court at 9.30 am today amid tight security. He was charged alongside Obeid Lutale and UPDF officer Capt. Denis Oola. Besigye’s lawyers and many of his supporters were caught unaware of the development and had to rush to court on short notice.
The prosecution claims that the trio and others still at large between the year 2023 and November 2024 in various places/countries, including Geneva (Switzerland), Athens (Greece), Nairobi (Kenya), and Kampala (Uganda) contrived a plot, act or matter by force of arms to overturn the government of Uganda as by law established and expressed or declared such plot, act or matter by utterances and overt acts.
This trial now marks the official transfer of the case from the military court to the civilian court as ordered by the Supreme Court on January 31.
