Archbishop Ssemogerere Emphasizes Humility in His Easter Message
The Archbishop of Kampala Catholic Archdiocese, Paul Ssemogerere, urged the catholics to continue behaving well as they have during the Lenten season.
His Grace made these remarks during the Easter Mass celebrated at Rubaga Cathedral, where he condemned acts of land grabbing and killing, which have become commonplace. He emphasized that Christians should avoid such vices as they contradict gospel values. Additionally, he expressed condolences to the sick and those who have lost loved ones this year.
“Let us continue with humility, humbleness, soulful passion, patience, and respect for one another, just as we have been doing during the Lenten period,” cautioned His Grace Ssemogerere. He also urged believers to abandon bad habits such as quarreling and using vulgar language, as the resurrection of Jesus has washed away their sins.
“The acts of sinning should be left in the grave, and we should be resurrected with Jesus. We are friends and brothers, and when we make mistakes, we should always forgive each other because no one is perfect,” he said.
The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, also delivered an Easter message to his subjects, conveyed to the congregation by former Prime Minister Mulwanyamuli Ssemwogere. In his message, the Kabaka urged his people to remain strong despite challenges and to avoid being swayed by material gains such as wealth and physical possessions, emphasizing the importance of integrity and respecting agreements.
“As Buganda, we should always honor the agreements we make with others, whether written or verbal, as this demonstrates good morals and integrity,” His Majesty stated.
He also called on his subjects to continue fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS, particularly in the three Buganda Districts where it is most prevalent.
Minister of State in charge of Higher Education, Dr. JC Muyingo, called on the church to support government efforts in conveying messages that encourage the masses, especially youth, to embrace poverty eradication programs. He also urged religious leaders to initiate poverty eradication programs in their respective parishes.
Regarding road safety, Dr. Muyingo urged people to condemn motorists who drive recklessly or overspeed, as they are a major cause of accidents in Uganda.
“If we want to combat the rampant road crashes, we should condemn and isolate motorists who drive carelessly and overspeed, as they have become a menace on our roads,” Dr. Muyingo said.
He also urged religious leaders to promote environmental conservation by encouraging tree planting, starting with diocesan schools and parishes.
Fr. Achilles Mayanja of Rubaga Parish reported that the church baptized 18 converts from other religions on the eve of Easter, while Nansana Parish baptized 20 converts during Easter Sunday Mass. Fr. Mayanja also appealed to believers to contribute funds for the roofing of the newly constructed priests’ house, one of the projects commemorating Rubaga Parish’s 100 years of existence.
