In a landmark move for Uganda’s health insurance sector, APA Insurance Uganda, in partnership with Hollard Health, has launched a new, innovative health insurance solution called ‘APA International Health’. With a maximum coverage limit of up to Shs36 billion, the new offering is designed for individuals, families, SMEs, and corporations, promising to transform healthcare from a reactive service into a proactive, digitally-driven wellness journey.
The launch marks a significant step forward in health management, blending cutting-edge technology with a focus on preventive care to improve health outcomes and reduce costs.
The APA International Health solution is specifically tailored for an increasingly digitally-savvy market. With Uganda having the world’s second youngest population, where 78% of citizens are under the age of 35, the new offering is perfectly positioned to resonate with a demographic that is highly receptive to digitally-enabled services.
This solution is particularly timely as Uganda experiences a health transition from communicable diseases to non-communicable, lifestyle-related conditions. At the core of this innovative offering is the HealthMov wellness app. The app places a virtual health ecosystem in the hands of every member, allowing them to proactively manage their well-being.
Using advanced technology, it can track vital health metrics like heart rate, breathing, stress levels, and Body Mass Index (BMI) simply through facial and movement scans.
Manan Desai, CEO of APA Uganda, emphasised the app’s intuitive nature, stating, “it puts a virtual doctor, personal trainer, health coach, and mentor in every member’s pocket.” This digital-first approach provides personalised feedback, lifestyle guidance, and even rewards members for positive behaviour changes.
It also offers crucial features such as telehealth consultations and access to second medical opinions, ensuring that timely and informed healthcare decisions can be made anytime, anywhere.
The launch is a product of a strategic partnership between Apollo Investments Limited (APA Insurance’s parent company) and Hollard International, a collaboration aimed at unlocking new business opportunities across Africa. According to Ashok Shah, Group CEO of Apollo Investments Limited, the primary goal is to “encourage healthier living among members, which in turn reduces healthcare costs and improves overall health outcomes.”
The APA International Health product provides a modular product design, allowing members to “cherry-pick” benefits to suit their specific needs. It offers five comprehensive plans with coverage areas extending to Africa, India, Europe, and worldwide.
Tobe Hope, CEO of Hollard Health, highlighted the company’s commitment to the continent, stating, “Because we know that Africa’s demands are unique, we are committed to helping the continent thrive by offering the right cost-effective health insurance for its diverse needs.” He noted that the service delivery is reinforced by Henner, a trusted Third-Party Administrator (TPA) known for its reliability and efficient claims processing.
He stressed that this offering sets a new standard for healthcare coverage in the region by focusing on prevention, providing comprehensive coverage, and leveraging technology to foster a healthier, more empowered community.
