Anti Corruption Court Remands Butaleja Officials Accused of Misusing Public Funds
Two Senior Butaleja District Local Government Officials, Hirya Julius (Town Clerk) and Namutiga Charles Guloba (Assistant Engineer),have been remanded to prison until June 14, 2024.
The duo was arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo, Kampala, on charges of Abuse of Office. They were arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
The duo allegedly abused their authority while working at Busolwe Town Council, Butaleja district in May 2022. They irregularly approved contracts to World Host Consultants Ltd for the designing of the town council’s structural plan without following procurement procedures, resulting in the loss of public funds in payments to the irregularly contracted company.
The court deferred to grant them bail until they reappear on the set day for mention of their case and bail application.
Hirya allegedly fraudulently awarded the town council structural and planning contract to World Host Consultants Ltd at 32 m shillings, without following procurement procedures, leading to the loss of public funds.
Guloba, then the assistant Engineer in Busolwe Town Council, Butaleja District also allegedly collaborated in approving contracts to World Host Consultants Ltd without adhering to procurement procedures, which resulted in financial losses for the council.
The duo were arrested in May 2022 by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
