Amb Kafeero Advocates for Human Rights and Cease-fire in Gaza at UN Human Rights Council Session

Ambassador Arthur Kafeero, who is the Deputy Permanent Representative of Uganda to the UN in Geneva, delivered a statement today on behalf of the NAM Group during the 55th session of the Human Rights Council. Addressing Agenda item 2, he emphasized the importance of upholding the Universality, Indivisibility, and non-selectivity principles of Human Rights. Additionally, he called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza.

Expressing grave concern over the deteriorating situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, Ambassador Kafeero highlighted the catastrophic humanitarian crisis faced by the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli military aggression and siege since October 2023.

Ambassador Kafeero also urged the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to consider the unique challenges and contexts of member states while carrying out its duties. He stressed the importance of objectivity, independence, and impartiality, advocating for constructive dialogue, cooperation, and assistance tailored to the needs of states in the field of human rights.

Acknowledging the impact of unilateral coercive measures on human rights, Ambassador Kafeero reaffirmed the NAM’s commitment to collaborating with the Office of the High Commissioner to strengthen human rights mechanisms and foster an international order based on inclusion, mutual understanding, and respect for cultural diversity.
