Uganda’s delegation, headed by H.E. Adonia Ayebare, the Permanent Representative of Uganda to the United Nations, is actively participating in the Pre COP 28 event, taking place in Abu Dhabi from the 30th to the 31st of October 2023. This two-day event, which commenced yesterday, was formally inaugurated by Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, the President-Designate for COP28 UAE. Dr. Al Jaber’s opening remarks emphasized the global imperative of uniting to address climate change.
The opening ceremony was followed by a plenary roundtable discussion and subsequent breakout sessions, focusing on key thematic areas such as adaptation, mitigation, and the means of implementation.
In his statement during the Plenary Roundtable themed “Towards a Transformational Global Stocktake,” H.E. Adonia Ayebare emphasized the interconnectedness of climate action and development. He advocated for Global Stocktaking to become the overarching global objective within the context of adaptation. Ayebare highlighted that it should serve as not only a platform for accountability but also as a catalyst for ongoing improvement. He reiterated Uganda’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders as it assumes the chairmanship of the G77.
Pre-COP 28 serves as a preparatory meeting for ministers and negotiators ahead of COP 28, which is scheduled to occur from November 30th to December 12th, 2023, in Dubai, UAE. Uganda is one of the countries set to have a prominent presence with its pavilion at the COP 28 conference
