ABBA Re-Björn Lights Up Kampala with a Nostalgic Night of 70s and 80s Hits
It was a night of nostalgia, glitter, and disco fever as revellers stepped back in time to the 70s and 80s, transforming into Dancing Queens.
Sam, Kelly, Murcus, and Toby, better known as ABBA Re-Björn, took the stage at Somewhere Else Restaurant in Naguru, delivering a spectacular tribute to the iconic Swedish pop group ABBA.
Formed in 1972 in Stockholm, ABBA , comprising Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, dominated the music scene with a catalogue of nearly 200 chart-topping songs.
Fast forward to last Friday and Saturday, Kampala got a taste of ABBA magic, courtesy of the tribute band that has been covering the supergroup for years.
When word spread that “ABBA” was coming to town, some fans dared to hope for the original legends. While that wasn’t the case, no one left disappointed. ABBA Re-Björn lit up the night, their act as polished as the originals, leaving the audience in awe.
DJ King Xavier kept the vibe alive during the wait, spinning retro hits from Ace of Base, Billy Ocean, Kool and the Gang, and Commodores. The party was already in full swing when, at exactly 9:28 p.m., ABBA Re-Björn stormed the stage, opening with “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme,” a hit that once topped charts in Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland, and Switzerland. The crowd was immediately transported back in time.
The setlist was a dream for any ABBA fan. “Super Trouper,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Honey Honey,” “Angel Eyes,” “Chiquitita,” “Fernando,” “What’s the Name of the Game,” and “SOS” had the audience singing along.
After a brief intermission, the band returned in dazzling new outfits and kept the energy high with “Lay All Your Love on Me,” “Voulez-Vous,” “Money, Money, Money,” “Confetti,” “Does Your Mother Know,” and of course, “Dancing Queen.”
As the night reached its climax, the crowd belted out the lyrics to “Thank You for the Music,” “Waterloo,” and “Take a Chance on Me.”
The throwback concert, sponsored by Nation Media Group and I&M Bank, drew a multigenerational crowd, each reliving or discovering ABBA’s timeless tunes for the first time.
Fenon Events ensured the production was top-notch, handling the stage, sound, and lighting. The band even gave a special shout-out to the technical crew.“
“Thank you for the good sound,” Kelly said, appreciating the flawless audio experience that amplified the night’s magic.
The venue itself, decked out in retro style with disco balls and an open dance floor, added to the nostalgic atmosphere.
Revellers, many of whom sported bellbottoms, groovy suits, and disco-ready spandex, danced with abandon under the twinkling lights. The band was interactive, pulling audience members into the show and even singing “Happy Birthday” to a few lucky fans.
The ABBA Re-Björn concert wasn’t just a tribute; it was a celebration of music, memories, and the joy of dancing the night away. For Ugandan fans, it was a night that will be remembered for years to come, truly a concert of a lifetime.
