President Yoweri Museveni has said he will meet church leaders to resolve the matter of the demolished St. Peter’s Church in Ndeeba in Uganda’s capital Kampala.
While visiting Ndeeba on Friday, the President lashed out at the people involved in razing the religious facility, saying it is a sin or curse to destroy a church.
The four-decade-old church was knocked down Sunday night, reportedly over a protracted wrangle between the church leadership and a businessman only identified as Dodovico.
Its demolition has sparked off a lot of public reaction as well as the intervention of various agencies, including the Police, religious leaders and State House. A number of Police officers have since been arrested as investigations continue.
On Friday, President Museveni offered the residents assurance that he would look into the matter and have it resolved by top clergy. The President urged the residents to return to their work and not form crowds in observance of social distancing – and leave the authorities to handle the matter.
He promised to punish all those who demolished the church.
Museveni’s assurance sparked off celebrations from the crowd, who watched from a distance.
Although the residents were eager to catch a glimpse of the President, they were encouraged not to converge amid the threat posed by the coronavirus.
Museveni said he would invite the church leaders and they forge a solution to the matter. He said that even if the church were in the wrong, it would not be justification for anyone to destroy it, adding that it is a sin or curse to do so.
