Museveni Phones Otafiire to Direct on UTL Revamp

President Museveni has directed the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire and warned against taking unilateral decisions in the management of Uganda Telecommunications’s issues (UTL), advising that government must be involved in the process of finding a suitable investor amid plans to revamp the telecom company.

In a letter signed by the President and dated July 3 letter said, “As I have guided on several occasions, given the strategic importance of UTL to the economy, the government has been in the process of identifying a suitable investor/s to partner with to revamp UTL as opposed to divesting it.”

Mr Museveni reminded Ofafiire that the decision not to liquidate UTL was taken by Cabinet.

This comes after the Minister of Finance, Mr Matia Kasaija had told Daily Monitor newspaper that the fate of management of Uganda Telecom (UTL) would be decided in the next three days.

“We are trying to handle this matter at the highest level possible. You will hear from us in another three days,” Mr Kasaija said.

Meanwhile, Otafiire has written to the Registrar General to expedite the process of sourcing a strategic investor and continue updating the minister who will in turn update Cabinet accordingly.
