Police in Kampala are investigating a series of motor vehicle number plate thefts that have been reported in the Maganjo policing area since January 2026.
The suspect, Mugerwa Umaru, 29, was arrested during a police foot patrol operation in the early hours of 12 March 2026 at around 2:00am along Mau Jinja Kaloli Road in Maganjo B.
According to the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, victims had reported that unknown individuals were stealing vehicle number plates and leaving behind a telephone contact demanding Shs500,000 for their return.
During the operation, police officers found the suspect in possession of suspected housebreaking implements, documents containing the telephone contact used in the extortion scheme, and a SIM card linked to the same number.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Mugerwa allegedly confessed to participating in the thefts. He subsequently led police officers to locations where several stolen number plates had been hidden.
Police recovered 17 motor vehicle number plates concealed in bushes in Jinja Kaloli and Kilokole Zone in Kawempe Division.
Owoyesigyire said the suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue to identify possible accomplices and establish the full extent of the criminal network.
Police have also advised motorists to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious incidents, particularly cases where number plates are stolen and ransom demands made.
