A 45-year-old Pentecostal pastor, Reuben Turyasingura, has been committed to the High Court for trial over allegations that he raped a 21-year-old male barber.
The decision was made by Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Ritah Neumbe, who ordered that the suspect be tried at the High Court during the next criminal session.
During the proceedings, Joan Keko told court that although the offence could legally be handled by a magistrate’s court, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has discretion under the law to refer such cases to the High Court.
Keko cited Section 169 of the Magistrates Courts Act, explaining that the DPP may elevate certain matters for trial at the High Court.
“Even if the matter can be handled by the magistrate’s court, Section 169 of the MCA gives the DPP discretion to refer the matter to the High Court for trial. The crime is rampant and the case can be handled by the High Court,” Keko submitted.
Prosecution alleges that the incident involved a 21-year-old barber residing in Kikulu Zone in Kawempe Division, Kampala.
The accused pastor is affiliated with Serenity Foundation Ministries and is also reported to be a student at Cavendish University Uganda.
Following the committal, the case file will now be forwarded to the High Court of Uganda, where the pastor will face full criminal trial proceedings.
At the High Court, the prosecution will present evidence and witnesses, while the accused will have the opportunity to defend himself against the charges.
If convicted, the offence carries severe criminal penalties under Ugandan law.
