The Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, representing H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has officially commissioned the BKK Ferry Project connecting Buyende, Kaberamaido and Serere Districts. The commissioning ceremony was organised at Bukungu Landing Site in Buyende District, where the ferries will operate from Bukungu to Kaberamaido District and Kagwara Landing Site in Serere District. The new vessels are expected to significantly ease movement of people, goods and services across Lake Kyoga, strengthening trade ties and social interaction between communities in the two regions.
While delivering the President’s message, she emphasized that the BKK Ferries are a strategic investment in connectivity, productivity & national transformation. The ferries will link Bukungu in Buyende District to Kaberamaido and Serere districts, creating a safer and more reliable alternative to small boats that have long served the route.
The commissioning attracted leaders from both Busoga and Teso, who describe the development as historic for the two sub-regions.

Among the notable leaders in attendance is the First Deputy Prime Minister and Kamuli District Woman Member of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga. Also present was the State Minister for Fisheries, Hellen Adoa, Members of Parliament from the two regions, Resident District Commissioners, and several local government leaders.
Locals in Bukungu have welcomed the initiative, saying the ferries will reduce travel time, lower transport costs, and open up economic opportunities, particularly for farmers and traders who depend on cross-lake trade. They have expressed optimism that the improved transport link will enhance access to markets, health services and education facilities, while also strengthening cultural and social ties between Busoga and Teso.
The commissioning of the BKK ferries marks another milestone in government efforts to expand water transport infrastructure and promote inclusive development across Uganda’s regions.
